"Regarding how long to tell clients SEO will take, it's difficult to say. Assuming you know what you're doing and do it all correctly, have chosen the most appropriate keyword phrases, etc., then the less competitive phrases should start to see results fairly quickly once the engines have spidered the pages. The more competitive could take a lot longer and would depend on how popular the site is on the Internet as a whole.
Also, it will depend on whether we're talking about a brand new domain or an older one. New ones could take much, much longer, especially in light of Google's aging delay (could be 9-12 months before it will rank for much of anything for new domains). Older, well-established domains with a lot of links built up over the years can see results right away."
